Remarkable 490th anniversary of the production of alcoholic beverages

This year the Distillery Distillery by Green Tree celebrates its 490th anniversary of producing alcoholic beverages. This incredible milestone is even more impressive when we consider that the production of spirits was never interrupted by wars, famine or fires. Today the distillery is one of the most distinguished producers of alcoholic beverages in the Czech Republic. The Distillery Distillery by Green Tree is a 100% Czech-owned firm.

Remarkable 490th anniversary

Years ago in the Regional Archive in Brno we would have blown the centuries-old dust from the parchment scrolls to find the ancient statement of an estate owner: “I, Wilhelm of Pernstein and Helfenstein, lord and heir and rightful holder of the Plumlov domain hereby declare….”

We learn that many houses in Prostějov had been granted the privilege of storing and tapping wine, brewing beer, and distilling spirits.

But in time the majority of these houses abandoned the activity and with respect to the number of years that have passed it’s hardly surprising. After all, the document is dated “Sunday, the Feast Day of St Procopius, one thousand, five hundred and eighteen years from the birth of God’s Son.”

And yet, one distillery carried on: The House by Green Tree.

The foundation for today’s distinguished liqueur producer was laid.

Today the ancient document mentioned above is deposited in the State Archive in Prague. Reading it would certainly require expert thawing technology, since the flood of 2002 damaged many documents. That darned centralisation! A photographic copy shows the first lines of the text – let’s try to decipher the period calligraphy.
