Starorežná Prostějov » Product » Absinth History

And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood, and meny men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

Revelation of St. John, chapter 8, verse 10 and 11

Artemis

Since the Biblical times, mankind has known the strange bitter taste and special qualities of wormwood (Artemisia Absinthium), which is the basis for our product. Even Plinius says that after a cart race, the winner was given a glass of wormwood wine to be reminded that the triumph has also some botter aspects. The plant is said to have been given the name by Artemis, as an expression of thanks for its good done to people: it supports digestion and secretion of digestive juice, it influences positive functions of the stomach, it relieves convulsions of myenteron, it works as a bactericidal agent, it protects the body from helminth, atc. Artemis was the Goddess of the Moon and she protected virgins. We would like to add that the Greek word of absinthion means „free of sweetness“.

Beginnings

Absinth 2 l

The recipe for this decent spirit containing wormwood was probably created by Dr. Ordinairie, a military doctor from a small French town of Quingey. Later, it was inherited by his housekeeper, Mrs. Henriod. This lady started a noteworthy story of the said spirit (bon extrait de absinthe) in the second half of the 18th century. The popularity of Absinth grew, and in the late 19th it completely conquered the French alcohol market. Spirit of distinct green colour was popular with Bohemians and the fashion of its drinking spread beyond the French border. Within the Paris area, high society got used to spending the lunch hours in a café with Absinth (so called the „green hour – heure verte“).

Ceremony

Absinth drinking requires time and the right mood. Check the clearness of the glass and fill it with approx. 0,04 l of Absinth. The glass should be filled up to one third. Use the Absinth spoon as a bridge and place it over the glass edges. Put two sugar cubes on it. You are going to use a little jar with a narrow top and pour a tiny stream of water over the sugar cubes. Enjoy the water dissolving the sugar, flowing to the glass and mixing with its content. Fill the glass up to two thirds.

You can slowly consume this perfidious mixture and immerse in Offenbach´s and impressionist times. You will experience the strenge smell of wormwood, the fabulous plant.
